Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a form of contactless, automatic identification and data capture technology. An RFID system consists of three basic components; An RFID reader, a host computer and a tag that is electronically programmed with variable data. The reader activates the tag by sending a radio signal with a preset frequency. Data in the tag is then decoded by the reader and then transmitted to a host computer to be processed. Low-frequency RFID (30KHz to 500kHz) have short transmission rages. High-frequency RFID systems (850MHz to 950MHz and 2.4GHz to 2.5GHz) offer longer transmission ranges; more than 90 feet. EAS systems commonly operate at 8.2MHz and 13.56MHz. In general, the higher the frequency, the higher the distance and higher the cost of the system.
